International colour expert Pantone has announced that its official ‘Colour of the Year 2019’ is inspired by warmth and energy, Living Coral. Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. But what does this new colour mean for jewellery in 2019? IJL’s Trends Editor, Paola De Luca, delved into the six key trends that will shape SS/19 for jewellery retailers, brands and designers, exclusively for IJL; some of which, drew upon the warmth of ‘Living Coral’ Neo-Classic The pearl continues its renaissance in modern designs. Myriad colours, from golden, peachy pink and white South Sea to silvery-black Tahitian, are inspiring designers to craft new collections with the pearl as the star. To nail this trend, think classic designs with a twist set in precious yellow or white gold. Pearls as stackable charms for necklaces, or combined with a medallion or collection of beads, is likely to shine through. The materials used are gold, either yellow or white; pearls play a leading role. Personalised jewellery: a pearl as a charm, or combined with a medallion and beads.

Building a partnership with their retail customers is core to their business values and this initiative aims to further develop that partnership. After following the series, retailers will benefit from stronger sales within their pearl ranges. Sales teams will feel more confident having built a deeper knowledge of pearls and will have a stronger engagement with this product area leaving them more able to tell the pearl ‘story’ in store. Information on pearls available in the public sphere is often either lengthy and academic or inaccurate. To tackle this problem in the past, Raw Pearls have curated seminars with what was Holts Academy in London and have also given in-store team training by appointment with their retailers. The release of these videos will streamline their training approach and aim to give access to accurate, relevant and manageable chapters of information to any sales team member, at any time and in any location. Jonathan Raw, Managing Director of Raw Pearls, said “Our partner retailers need accurate information to educate and inspire their end customer and we feel this has been lacking in relation to a gem that, whilst has a huge history, has always remained a mystery, often even in the trade.” Raw Pearls will be releasing the first video in January 2019. The short films will be available to watch online for those who learn best by listening and watching and will be accompanied by notes for those who prefer to learn by reading. You can find out more about the package by contacting [email protected] from https://blog.jewellerylondon.com/raw-pearls-to-launch-accessible-pearl-training-videos-for-sales-teams/ Award-winning UK pearl jewellery brand, Raw Pearls, have attended a number of events held by their retail customers over the festive period. These have included Jacobs the Jeweller’s Christmas charity event (as part of their ‘Seventy for Seventy’ campaign), one of Gatwards of Hitchin’s popular ‘Gin & Gemstones’ evenings, and PSJ Jewellers Sherborne’s Valuation Day. Miranda Raw, Director of Raw Pearls, said “Retailers and their suppliers, like us, must work together to discover ways to grow our business models to better incorporate experience on the back of this ever-evolving retail environment”. In Deloitte’s Retail Trends 2018 article, the group focus on the changing nature of high street retail. One of the key themes on their hitlist is ‘Be more than a store’. Here they note “experience is more important than ever, and stores need to be more than just places to transact”. Miranda added, “In a world where retail is moving increasingly online, connecting face-to-face with shoppers still holds value and retailers with bricks and mortar stores must take advantage of this”. Raw Pearls aim to build deeper, longer-term partnerships with their retail customers, including family businesses, just like them. Raw Pearls offers a range of services to support their clients including event support, pearl education and product photography. They will be announcing some exciting news soon with regards to a new service for their customers, so watch this space! In the midst of creating her second collection, Natalie Perry shares her experience of IJL KickStart. Q. What was your overall impression of KickStart and how did it help your business in its early stages? I found Kickstart to be an extremely valuable experience for me. It exposed my brand to key retailers in the trade to which I would have struggled to contact otherwise. Taking part in the training day was also greatly helpful to me as I received valuable advice about pricing and what retailers are looking for. Having the backing of an initiative like Kickstart helps first time exhibitors stand out at IJL as the collective receives a lot of press before the show so visitors are already aware of you. Q. Being a KickStarter does involve investing in the cost of a shared stand at IJL 2018 – what would you say to people who are worried about taking the leap? First of all the stand we had was in prime location with a great view over the show-space. The display size allocated to each designer was also generous so I found there to be plenty of room to display my collection. Even though it does cost to exhibit as part of Kickstart, it is cheaper than the cost of a standard stand and you get the added support and exposure from the initiative as well as a bursary to help with travel, accommodation or marketing costs. Q. How can future KickStarters capitalise on their IJL Journey and the IJL experience? What would be your advice? I would say take all the advice you can get during the training day which happens approximately two months before the show and use this to prepare thoroughly. My tips to ensure you’re prepared are to ensure you have professional high-resolution product shots and concise information about your brand, whether that be a designer statement, a press release or a lookbook. It’s also really important to make sure your price lists and line sheets are correct to make it simple for retailers to order from you. The best way to convince retailers that you’re professional is to be as prepared as possible! There will be press opportunities before the show, such as interviews with local newspapers and features in the jewellery trade press so ensure you have the images they need and answer any interview questions on time so you don’t miss the opportunity. Q. How did KickStart help you on your journey to success? It was so valuable to be able to chat to trade professionals at IJL as well as being able to see which pieces stood out the most to retailers which will help me to develop my collections in the future. Q. Finally, how is your jewellery industry career or brand progressing and what are you hoping to achieve in the future? Since IJL I have partnered with two new bricks and mortar retailers in the UK as well as a new online platform so my collections are now more widely available to customers. I hope to continue to expand my retailers in both the UK and overseas and I’m in the process of creating my second collection. Heading into it’s 10th Year, KickStart will be open for submissions in January 2019. To read more terms and conditions about KickStart, please click here.
